چکیده

Changes in microbial characteristics in soils with increasing salinity were measured in 30 soil samples belonging to Kattikhel and Dargai soil series occuring in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa of North West Pakistan during 2009. Microbial characteristics including microbial biomass C, microbial biomass N, C/N ratio in microbial biomass, N mineralization, nitrification, rate of CO2 evolution and cumulative CO2 production were measured. The soils used in the study were alkaline in reaction and had electrical conductivity (EC) gradient from 0.63-32.3 dS m. All microbial indices showed a decreasing trend with increasing EC. The average microbial biomass C of soils decreased from 391 mg kg in soils with EC of <4.0 dS m to 209 mg in soils with EC of >12 dS m. The same trend was observed for microbial biomass N, N mineralization, nitrification, rate of CO2 evolution and cumulative CO2 production with respect to elevated EC. The C/N ratio of soil microbial biomass increased with increasing salinity. These results suggested that soil microbial biomass were highly sensitive to salinity and can be used as indicator for management of salt affected soils.

اثر شوری بر برخی شاخص‌های میکروبی خاک در حضور و عدم حضور ریشه‌های زنده گیاه

Similar to plants, soil salinity may reduce microbial growth and activities in different ways. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of different levels of salinity on some microbial indices in the presence and absence of plant's living roots. In this study, five levels of salinity using NaCl, CaCl2, MgCl2 and KCl and three soil media (soil with no plant, soil cultivated with wheat...

اثر باکتری‌های‌محرک‌رشد، قارچ ‌مایکوریزا و تنش‌شوری بر جذب برخی عناصر غذایی توسط گیاه ذرت (Zea mays L.)

Improving soil microbial activity and using symbiosis and synergistic relations between plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and plants through improving nutrient uptake can cause better growth of plants especially at salinity tension condition. To investigate the effect of AMF and PGPR application on growth and some nutrient uptake by corn in differen...

Effect of salinity tolerant PDH45 transgenic rice on physicochemical properties, enzymatic activities and microbial communities of rhizosphere soils

The effect of genetically modified (GM) plants on environment is now major concern worldwide. The plant roots of rhizosphere soil interact with variety of bacteria which could be influenced by the transgene in GM plants. The antibiotic resistance genes in GM plants may be transferred to soil microbes. In this study we have examined the effect of overexpression of salinity tolerant pea DNA helic...

Bacterial exopolysaccharide and biofilm formation stimulate chickpea growth and soil aggregation under salt stress

To compensate for stress imposed by salinity, biofilm formation and exopolysaccharide production are significant strategies of salt tolerant bacteria to assist metabolism. We hypothesized that two previously isolated salt-tolerant strains Halomonas variabilis (HT1) and Planococcus rifietoensis (RT4) have an ability to improve plant growth, These strains can form biofilm and accumulate exopolysa...

Correction: Salinity and Bacterial Diversity: To What Extent Does the Concentration of Salt Affect the Bacterial Community in a Saline Soil?

In this study, the evaluation of soil characteristics was coupled with a pyrosequencing analysis of the V2-V3 16S rRNA gene region in order to investigate the bacterial community structure and diversity in the A horizon of a natural saline soil located in Sicily (Italy). The main aim of the research was to assess the organisation and diversity of microbial taxa using a spatial scale that reveal...
